“JAIME MET US , AND GREETED ME LIKE AN OLD FRIEND – BIG HUGS AND KISSES ON BOTH CHEEKS… WE HAVE BEEN EMAILING BACK AND FORTH SINCE LAST MARCH ABOUT ALL THESE TOURS, AND YES, I FELT LIKE I WAS GREETING SOMEONE I KNEW QUITE WELL, RATHER THAN MEETING HIM OF THE FIRST TIME!”
Ushuaia City- the southernmost city in the world built of a prison. The foundation of the Ushuaia dates back to 19th century- namely, at the end of the 19th century, Argentina’s president wanted to secure the Sovereignty of that part of the country; also, at the time, Argentina was facing the problem of not having enough jails for all the prisoners; he made the decision to found the city in that area that will be built by prisoners as a punishment- they have built the roads, the pier, office buildings and other. But, the prisoners were not the first inhabitants of this region, of course- those were the Yamana Indians, who have given the name of the whole region as it is today, which means ‘the bay that penetrates westward’.
Nowadays, the prison does not work anymore and it is Maritime Museum, which we will visit as part of our tour; there you can see the cells where the prisoners were jailed; but the most interesting part of the visit is at Hall no 4, where you can find scale replica of the ships that belonged to the first expedition as well as photos, videos, and objects relating to the history of Tierra del Fuego.
Ask the tour guide to tell you a story about the foundation of the city and the life of the prisoners.
The city tour includes the old area of the town, the port and the hilly streets climbing the mountain from where it is possible to take good photographs.
As part of the excursion, we will also visit the Museum of the End of the World- a good way to get to know Island history, the legends about pirates, adventures, and Indians with many of their artifacts and chronicles In the library of a great value.
OPTIONAL VISIT TO MARTIAL GLACIER AVAILABLE. ( ABOUT 2 Hours)
After going uphill along a winding road you will get to the base of a chairlift and the ski slope- providing wonderful views of the Beagle channel, the glacier and Navarino Island (Chile). If you take the chairlift, you will have to choose between getting to the glacial ice or the Cadon Negro walk up for about one hour to reach a place with an amazing view, including a view on the Andorra valley.
Being the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia is connected with the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean with Beagle Channel, therefore the visit can be arranged as shore excursion when you are cruising.
