ALERCE ANDINO PARK

“JAIME MET US AT THE PORT, AND GREETED ME LIKE AN OLD FRIEND – BIG HUGS AND KISSES ON BOTH CHEEKS… WE HAVE BEEN EMAILING BACK AND FORTH SINCE LAST MARCH ABOUT ALL THESE TOURS, AND YES, I FELT LIKE I WAS GREETING SOMEONE I KNEW QUITE WELL, RATHER THAN MEETING HIM OF THE FIRST TIME!”

Meet the ancient forest: Alerce Andino National Park Tour

Alerce Andino National Park is located in the province of Llanquihue, in the districts of Puerto Montt and Cochamó. Most of the park area is covered with larch forests.

Leaving Puerto Montt and taking the south road we will be arriving at the national park, where ancient forest rests. We arrive with less than an hour-long ride; since Puerto Montt holds a good location with many of the cruisers stopping by, this can make a good option for shore excursions. The alerce trees covering the park grow only one centimeter every fifteen years, but it can live up to 4000 years. Since these trees live so long, the scientists used them to find out what was the climate like thousands of years ago. As known, every tree forms a new layer of wood under their bark; this layers are called the rings and are used for determinate the tree’s age, also revealing what was weather like, dry or rainy, hot or cold etc. Therefore, it is of vital importance to preserve their natural habitat as it is and not to harm the ecosystem. This park is the natural habitat of some endangered species, such as Pudu and monito del monte All this and more you will find out from the tour guide.

The National Park Alerce Andino is hanging between mountains, volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean. This wonderful travel will take us along the coast through the beginning of the Carretera Austral- famous for the fantastic landscapes along the road. Walking around for approximately two hours inside the park, surrounded by an exuberant rainforest, including the already mentioned Alerce trees (Fitzroya Cupressoide) we will notice the transformation during millions of years of these mountains created a landscape full of rivers, waterfalls, and lagoons. The wildlife here is very rich, with foxes, rabbits, pumas and many birds as the black woodpecker, the chucao, hued hued and the famous condor. Along the way to the Park, we will stop at different viewpoints, great for taking pictures and at small villages of fishermen.
