Punta Tombo is National Reserve in the central part of the Argentina’s coast, having that status since 1979. It is very well known to be the natural habitat of the Magellanic penguins which makes it perfect travel option for nature lovers. Namely, this place has the largest colony of penguins in all South America. This area is visited from September to April, as it is the time when the penguins migrate from Brazil to Punta Tombo to nest and raise their chicks until they again prepare for the migration to the southern Brazil, although November is considered the best month to go since in that time the babies are born. This place is full of small shrubs and burrows making it the perfect place for penguins to lay the eggs, as this way the eggs are protected from the birds and other predators. Other inhabitants here include Patagonian hares, foxes, gulls and cormorants
Magellanic Penguins prey on different fish, such as sardines, anchovies, silversides and other crustaceans, they hunt with an efficient technique based on their agile movements in the water. These abilities are taught to the chicks and you will have unique opportunity to see this in action.
The visit to the nature reserve must be carried out with a deep respect for the habitat and the species, as it has the status of the national reserve and there is a request not to touch the penguins.
This place is reachable by the national route from Puerto Madryn, making it the perfect close to the shore excursion. It is about 120 miles away from Puerto Madryn (making it about two and a half hours ride).

Punta Tombo travel tips:
Beware of the sun. Although temperatures are low, we recommend wearing a sun hat and putting on sun cream on a clear day.
– The climate of Patagonia is very dry. Apply moisturizer for skin and lips.
– Wear proper footwear. The roads are rough and without proper footwear or shoes for trekking, you may suffer sprains or feel uncomfortable in long walks.
