This Protected Natural Area, declared “Mankind’s Natural Heritage”, has one of the most fascinating ecosystem in the entire world, Whales, Orcas, Sea Lions, Elephants Seals, Magellan Penguins, Maras, Guanacos, and Choiques live all in the same habitat.
About 35 miles away from Puerto Madryn, we arrive to El Desempeño, main access to Peninsula Valdes, the first stop will be the interpretation center and from there we will head to Estancia San Lorenzo located at the north area of Peninsula Valdes.
San Lorenzo sheep farm is located in the Natural Protected Area Peninsula Valdés, 160 km/ 100 miles from the town of Puerto Madryn, in the Province of Chubut, Argentine Patagonia.
Along its coast we find an astonishing Magellanic penguin rookery with over 600.000 penguins, open to visitors every year between September 7th and March 31st.
Natural and Cultural Heritage. San Lorenzo’s coastline hosts wide open beaches as well as cliff areas. The action of erosion and the passing of time left ancient fossilized reef areas exposed in cliffs and gullies. They are true witness to a warm sea that flooded the region 20 million years ago.
Even before the arrival of the Tehuelche natives, these dunes were inhabited by men and women over 2,000 years ago. Their existence and way of life can be interpreted through animal remains and stone artifacts characteristic of their culture.
In younger times, between 1917 and 1953 a sea lion oil factory functioned on the beach. Its ruins can be visited nowadays as part of Peninsula Valdes’ historical heritage. Together with Magellan penguins, San Lorenzo offers the possibility of observing elephant seals, guanacos, rheas, owls, cavies and a great diversity of birds. Eventually, also Right whales and orca can be sighted.
Estancia San Lorenzo has a team of professional Park Rangers who are responsible for the conservation of the natural and cultural site. Out visitors can interact with them to learn about the latest news on the penguin rookery. For over 40 years we have encouraged the research on penguins, working with both national and foreign scientists.
Back on the farm, our guests can visit the interpretation center and the traditional farm premises, and taste an exquisite lamb BBQ. We also offer other menu options, including a vegetarian menu.
After the farm we will head to Punta Norte to visit the Elephant Seal, also Sea Lions and occasionally some Orcas.
