“This tour starts by going to the main square with its monument dedicated to Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese who discovered the famous Strait of Magellan. Here you can admire the European-style buildings in the historic city center which evokes the adventures and experiences of its pioneering settlers; shopping time is also possible in the local market. Our next stop is at the General Cemetery that contains luxury marbled mausoleums owned by the immigrant families that settled down here, all decorated with tall and well pruned cypress trees that make our cemetery be considered one of the most beautiful ones in South America. While driving through the main streets, we also stop where the shepherd’s statue is, another icon of the city. Our next visit is at Nao Victoria Museum, also known as Ferdinand Magellan’s Ship Museum, that makes you relive what these brave explorers experienced during this adventure. Get amazed by visiting these fantastic life-size ship replicas. Then, our last stop is at The Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint to overlook the city, the Strait of Magellan and the legendary Tierra del Fuego Island.”
OPTIONAL EXTENSIONS
“Located 60 kilometers south of Punta Arenas. It takes roughly an hour to get there. This is the site of the most historical importance being the first fort built in this area and also the site where a succesful colonization attempt took place, making Chile claim the famous Straits of Magellan through a precarious expedition. There is a stop on the way to visit Puerto Del Hambre remains (Port Famine), the first city previously founded by the Spaniards. Before getting back to Punta Arenas we will stop near a fishermen’s place to admire how they live in their small boats all year round with these changeable and tough weather conditions. More than being a historic touristic attraction, this is an amazing location to enjoy some of the best landscapes along the shores of the Straits of Magellan with native forest all around that makes it a great experience. If you like walking, your guide can also take you through the scenic trails around the fort area to get stunning views of the southern islands.”
