Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world (and in Argentina, naturally), born of a prison- namely the prisoners were obligated to build all the infrastructure as a punishment in the 19th century. But it was the ancient Yamana Indians who have given the name to this shire- it means the bay that penetrates westward.
The tour starts at the touristic pier, throughout the coast of Ushuaia, having a view of the most important buildings, Maritim Museum (once a prison), End of the World Museum and industrial area, etc. The tour guide will tell you about the interesting history of Ushuaia and its foundation- back in the days where it was inhabited by prisoners. From this point, the landscape is a combination of sea and mountains, from where can be seen mounts Olivia, Five Brothers, the Fique and Tunnel and the Encajonado River.
After leaving Ushuaia the catamaran sails into the Beagle channel and reaches Les Eclaireurs lighthouse. The Beagle channel is part of the Tierra del Fuego National park, which means its flora and fauna is protected by the law. During this tour, it is also possible to see pieces of the German steamer Monte Cervantes, which was shipwrecked in 1930.
Towards the Seal’s Island, it is possible to observe the games of these peculiar sea mammals and in complete silence the catamaran sails around the island during about 20 minutes observing its natural habitat. The tour continues with the catamaran going towards the Birds Island to see the Magellanic Cormorants, the Imperial Cormorants , the Giant Albatrosses, Petreles Fullman, Petreles, Squas and 20 different species of sea birds. Later, sailing through Paso Chico, the way back to Ushuaia, with a view of the beautiful frame that gives the Le Martial Mount and its glacier.
This travel destination is especially good for family with kids who will enjoy seeing the seals and the giant birds in its natural dwelling or for nature lovers and adventurers.
